Manager, Underwriting Operations

JOB SUMMARY

 

Responsible for the operational bridge between underwriting, underwriting assistants, systems, compliance, and broker service teams, ensuring that underwriting workflows, tools, and data practices are consistent, accurate, and scalable. Also,  responsible for optimizing underwriting operations, maintaining compliance with carrier and regulatory guidelines, and driving process improvements across the business.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day underwriting operations and workflow execution.
  • Manage and oversee underwriting staff and assistants.
  • Serve as liaison between underwriters, assistants, IT, compliance, and senior leadership.
  • Maintain and create policies, procedures, and quality assurance workflows
  • Support new hire onboarding, ongoing skills training for underwriting staff and assistants.
  • Ensure compliance with binding authority and E&S market requirements.
  • Collaborate on audit preparation and respond to carrier audit requests.
  • Track and report operational service levels, broker performance and KPI’s
  • Partner with underwriting leaders to prioritize system and process needs.
  • Ensure proper data capture across underwriting and policy management platforms.
  • Review underwriting files for completeness, compliance, and audit readiness.
  • Collaborate with IT and vendors to maintain underwriting platform functionality.
  • Facilitate internal quality control audits and carrier compliance reviews.
  • Maintain operational documentation, SOPs, and process reference materials.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with all company policies and procedures, and all federal, state and local laws, wherein the Company operates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Bachelor's Degree in Business or equivalent combination of education and experience

Ten (10) or more years related work experience

Experience in underwriting operations or support, preferably within E&S lines or a property catastrophe-focused MGA.

CPCU license Preferred

Certificate of General Insurance (INS) Preferred

 

 

SKILLS

 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in team leadership, mentoring, or cross-functional project roles.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance standards related to surplus lines markets.
  • Familiarity with carrier binding authority agreements and audit protocols.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with underwriters, brokers, and carriers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and underwriting workflow platforms.
  • Comfortable leading meetings, training sessions, and cross-functional projects.
  • Ability to translate underwriting needs into operational solutions.
