Staff Accountant
Job purpose:
The Staff Accountant will be responsible for providing overall financial cost information and analysis for SSAB Iowa and Value Plus.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Confirm receiving information for all scrap, alloys, fluxes, refractory material, electrodes, packaging and other consumables raw materials used in the manufacturing process
- Validate consumption data is accurate and supported by mill systems. Perform test counts of alloys, consumables, and certain packaging commodities to confirm inventory positions
- Analyze cycle-count and test count information related to raw materials and supply inventories, recommending changes to the general ledger and sub ledger systems. Meet with mill personnel responsible for regular counts and identify necessary procedural changes to processes
- Reconcile and audit scrap receiving reports with sub ledger & general ledger systems.
- Review raw material adjustments presented by purchasing department and receiving departments & enter into mill system
- Investigate & quantify alloy cost variances to determine the source of changes i.e. pricing, consumption and mix
- Consult with consignment product vendors confirming consumption of consignment inventory products. Ensure consumption information is correctly documented and participate in count processes
- Tracking of obsolete inventory that is being sent to cosigner
- Preparing monthly reconciliations for assigned accounts
- Generate weekly reporting & cost consumption of scrap for senior management review
- Generate monthly reporting analysis including cost variance analysis, analytical consumption detail
- Ad hoc reporting, journal entry preparation and detailed analysis and evaluation of adjustments are fundamental requirements
- Prepare weekly deposits of miscellaneous collections & reconcile reporting of the same
- Generating all financial and cost accounting information for one or more of the Cut-to-Length facilities.
- Gather, analysis, and manipulation of data required to generate the monthly reports.
- Review monthly results bringing focus to key control areas, namely: inventory costs and controls, production statistics and results, and overall profitability.
- Presenting ad hoc control items of concern through statistical review and detailed analysis
- Review and process employee expense reports for accuracy, completeness and compliance with company policies and procedures
- Assist with Research and Development tax credit
- Assist with finance portion of Purchase Requisition review
- Coordinate, establish and maintain Capital and Non-capital Work Orders for use in tracking major maintenance and non-maintenance facility projects;
Qualifications: Education and Experience:
Required Education:
- Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration
Required Experience:
- Knowledge of accounting and recordkeeping processes
- Previous experience with manufacturing industry
- Strong analytical skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Possess attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Word and Excel software
Working conditions:
This position operates primarily in an office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as desktop computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and postage meters. This role is partially sedentary. Filing and handling materials is required.

- This position does not have any direct reports
Position Type – Work Hours – Travel Requirements:
- Position is full time, salaried exempt
- Position works daytime shifts Monday-Friday with possibility of off hours
- Travel for this position is limited and expected to comprise less than 1% of work hours
