The general salary range for this position is $53,700-$75,100. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.

Humane World for Animals, a global leader in animal advocacy and protection, is seeking a Media Relations Specialist for the Media Relations department. In this position you will act on behalf of the Humane World for Animals family of organizations by pitching stories to reporters, identifying pitching opportunities, researching media contacts, routing written material through internal review and arranging media interviews with subject experts. Increase coverage of the organization and its issues.

Responsibilities:
• Works with the Media Relations Director to pitch issues and events to reporters with strong knowledge of animal issues and how they can be placed in the media for maximum impact;
•Develops targeted media lists with strong knowledge of relevant reporters, media outlets and opportunities to position animal protection issues, presents media campaign retrospectives and produces coverage reports using media monitoring software;
•Edits and routes press releases, advisories, letters to the editor, pitch stories and other collateral materials to the news media. Routes op-eds and letters to the editor to internal stakeholders;
•Responds to inquiries from news media. Supplies reporters with background materials and schedules interviews with organization spokespeople;
•Develops relationships with relevant reporters, including speaking with them on the phone, having in-person meetings and using online tools such as social media to develop a rapport;
•Distributes press releases utilizing media database and distribution software to media outlets;
•Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in public relations or journalism, or equivalent work experience required;
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a public relations environment required;
• Willing and able to travel as needed, approximately twice a year;
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
• Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
• Ability to multitask, and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments;
• Ability to exercise sound judgment;
• Strong written and verbal communication skills;
• Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
•Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
•Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
 
This position is in the DC Metro Area- remote eligible.
