JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision trims and prunes trees from the ground and by climbing; work is performed throughout the community as a member of a specialist crew, working independently or as lead worker of a sub crew; and performs related work as required. Work involves regular contact with residents.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
When assigned as lead worker, coordinates the work of two or more workers engaged in trimming and pruning trees working from the ground, ladders and by climbing; plants and removes trees.
Cleans sidewalks and streets after trimming or removal of trees, loads truck and drives to disposal site. Maintains job site and/or work area in a safe and orderly manner.
Operates various types of equipment when removing and trimming trees; cleans, adjusts and maintains assigned equipment.
Follows up on resident complaint requests, corrects problems or refers to a foreman or supervisor; notes disposition.
Works effectively with co-workers, customers and others by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listens to and objectively considers ideas and suggestions from others; keeps commitments; keeps others informed of work progress, timetables and issues; addresses problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical business solutions; addresses others by name, title or other respectful identifier, and; respects the diversity of our work force in actions, words and deeds.
Regular Attendance Required. All duties performed on site for the Community.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
F-800 Chipper Truck, utility truck, man lift, chain saws, handsaws, stump and brush grinder, pole pruner and safety climbing belt.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Exposure to dust equipment fumes and normal outdoor elements. Does not work in extreme inclement weather.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Educational development which produces the ability to read, write and apply common sense understanding to the carrying out of oral or written instructions. Considerable experience in grounds maintenance work or equivalent combination of education and experience which produces the following:
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
- Knowledge of the types and methods of care of the trees found in the Community.
- Knowledge of the field maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
- Ability to perform manual work requiring physical strength and stamina appropriate to the area of assignment.
- Ability to read and write work-related job instructions in English.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others in English.
- Skill in climbing.
- Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment appropriate to the nature of assignment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license and Class B Commercial Driver’s license (F-800 Chipper Truck).
Possession of certification by the International Society of Arboriculture as a “Tree Worker” or “Arborist” with certification union wages at technical level.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Stands for periods of up to 5 hours; continually lifts and carries up to 20 lbs.; occasionally lifts and carries up to 50 lbs.; continually balances, climbs, uses hands to finger, grasp, pull, reach and stoop; frequently pushes; occasional crawls, crouches and kneels; works daily at heights of up to 100 feet.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Reads, solves routine problems, reasons, verbal and written communication skills and customer contact.
