GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Perform duties under general supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Recreation. Participates in a wide variety of recreational and athletic activities. Responsible for planning, organization, and initiation of a diversified program of recreational and athletic events.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under direction of Director, plans and supervises all programming for the Recreation Department.

Train staff and volunteers in executing recreation programs and activities.

Establish rules and regulations for recreation programs and facilities.

Organize and supervise youth summer programs, sports activities and tournaments, after school activities, and city sanctioned events.

Monitors recreation at community center and park, including opening and closing of facility.

Monitors safety regulations and protocols of activities at the facility.

Check all equipment inside the building and on grounds on a regular basis to ensure safe and usable condition.

Ensures cleanliness of facility and grounds.

Oversee scheduling of recreational facilities.

Distribute program information to community through public speaking.

Assess the community and facility needs to develop and implement new recreational programs.

Evaluate the effectiveness of recreation programs and activities and identify areas for improvement.

Develop and implement marketing strategies to promote recreation programs.

Develops long range plans for recreation programs, parks, and facilities to accommodate according to community growth, goals, and parks and recreation needs.

Compiling and reviewing participants’ feedback to identify areas for activity improvement.

Administer various social media platforms to promote the Recreation Department and engage the public effectively.

Develops new strategies for increasing social media engagement.

Coordinates with league officials (such as Lebanon Youth Baseball & Softball Association or Wilson United Soccer) to plan or facilitate events.

Coordinates with City of Lebanon officials and employees to facilitate city sponsored events (i.e., Halloween, Christmas, or the Police Department’s National Night Out).

Administers the Recreation Department’s web page.

Does related work as required.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree in recreation management, parks and recreations, or related field.

Previous experience in teaching or instructing recreational activities is required. 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Valid Tennessee Driver’s License.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries.

Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts as necessary to complete office procedures.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge and ability to plan and develop programs on a community-wide basis.

Knowledge of equipment and supplies needed to operate a comprehensive recreation program.

Knowledge of safety regulations and risk management principles related to a variety of fitness, athletic and recreation programs.

Ability to organize and direct programs and events that meet community needs.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with local officials, staff and citizens.

Ability to keep routine records and make simple reports.

Ability to relate to children and youth and maintain proper conduct.

Ability to work cooperatively with youth, adults, and other organizations in the community.

Ability to work a flexible/varied schedule to include evenings, nights, and weekends depending on season, activities, and special events.

Ability to multi-task and have exceptional organizational skills.

Ability to demonstrate fundamental knowledge and accepted practices in recreational activities and sports.

Ability to assess goals and strategies and hold staff accountable to ensure successful implementation and completion of goals and objectives.

Ability to develop advertising, marketing, and promotional materials for recreation activities and facilities.

Ability to respond effectively to most sensitive inquiries.

Ability to use a personal computer and approved software

Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.

Ability to maintain social media accounts and create monthly newsletter.

Ability to maintain and update the Recreation Department website.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee often uses hands and fingers to manipulate mowing and marking devices. Majority of work is performed outdoors and requires the ability to work in adverse weather conditions.

 

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee uses standard office equipment and mowing and maintenance equipment and works both in and out of an office environment. The job requires travel between city office locations and recreation sites throughout the city. This job requires some heavy lifting.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Work involves administrative duties and a wide latitude of indoor and outdoor recreational activities. Occasional lifting and loading, especially when arranging and organizing activities.

Requires a flexible schedule with ability to adjust to daytime, nighttime, and weekend work.
