Lifeguard
Location: Chattanooga Metropolitan Area Command – Chattanooga, Tennessee
Position: Regular Full Time Lifeguard, East Lake Corps
Pay Rate: $15.00 /hour
About this opportunity:
Ensure that the pool operations follow established departmental policies and procedures. A lifeguard is an hourly position, which may be designed full-time, part-time, or as needed. Under the direction and supervision of the Lead Lifeguard, the person in this position will observe swimmers, protect life, prevent accidents, enforce regulations, and do related work as required.
Key responsibilities:
Maintain a Functional and Safe Area (40%)
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all instructors, volunteers, and participants.
- Generate legible and accurate accident and incident reports as required.
- Conduct routine water chemical checks and cleaning schedules as the Lead Lifeguard assigns.
- Follow and enforce the equipment checkout program—report defects, necessary repairs, etc.
- See that all equipment assigned to the facilities is maintained and adequately utilized.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
- Report all harmful problems with facilities to the Lead lifeguard.
Planning and Projects (30%)
- Help implement the plans set forth by the lead lifeguard by The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
- Prepare reports as assigned and maintain files as directed by the Lead Lifeguard.
- Help create the event and pool schedule to be included in the program guide.
- Be able to operate and generally maintain all office equipment. This would include but is not limited to the copier, fax machine, and computers.
- Maintain a professional attitude and approach to problem-solving.
Builds a Winning Team (30%)
- Will work cooperatively with the other on-site program aids.
- Will attend all scheduled staff meetings and management team meetings when directed by the lead lifeguard.
- Maintain a professional attitude and approach to problem-solving.
- Interact professionally with the public, Salvation Army Officers, and staff.
- Abide by The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures and accept the Salvation Army philosophy and mission.
- Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Chattanooga Area Command.
- Recognize the spiritual need of individuals, which may require referral to the officer/pastor who is an ordained minister of religion.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What we are looking for in you:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Knowledge of current best practices regarding the aquatics programs and keeping current with new changes that will affect programs.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations as defined by the Health Department and The Salvation Army.
- Knowledge of pool pump room operations.
- Ability to swim and extensive knowledge of swim programs.
- Ability to deal comfortably with stressful situations and follow emergency procedures.
- Ability to multi-task, follow instructions, and complete tasks safely and effectively. Must be able to adhere to safe aquatic practices.
- Ability to effectively build teams.
- Ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. Must be able to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
- Ability to develop and administer facility budgets.
- Ability to effectively provide leadership, counseling, and education to youth, parents, and staff.
- Ability and aptitude to make decisions and meet commitments within established policies and procedures and handle sensitive situations appropriately with staff, children, and parents.
- Ability to supervise staff and participants with varying educational and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to read, write and communicate the English language.
- Ability to use/operate janitorial supplies, hoses, computer/fax/copy machines, marine safety equipment, and other pool equipment such as lane lines and pool lifts.
- Ability to use Windows & Microsoft Office, which includes Microsoft Word and Excel.
Education and Experience
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Some Colleges or working towards a four-year degree.
And
- Three years of lifeguarding experience.
Or
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certifications
- Certification in Lifeguard Training.
- A certificate in Lifeguard Training Instructor is strongly desired.
- Safe From Harm Certification, as directed by supervisor.
- Swim lesson instruction is complete or completed within 90 days of hire.
- Water exercise instruction is strongly preferred.
- Completed and pass the Lead Lifeguard Training.
- Safe From Harm Certification, as directed by supervisor.
- NSPF Certified Pool Operator (CPO) (Preferred)
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Ability to meet attendance requirements.
- Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminished performance.
- Ability to read, write and communicate the English Language.
- Work requires the ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull moderately heavy (25-50 Lbs.) materials, supplies, and equipment. Moderate mobility duties are usually performed by a combination of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis.
