Job Summary
The Shop Production Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the service shop, optimizing productivity, and ensuring that service work meets dealership standards for quality and efficiency. This role involves coordinating technician activities, overseeing job scheduling, and implementing processes to enhance overall shop performance.
Essential Functions:
- Manage the service shop's workflow to ensure that repair and maintenance jobs are completed on time and within budget.
- Test drive vehicles after completing repairs or routine maintenance to ensure that the issue has been resolved.
- Optimize technician productivity by effectively scheduling work and balancing workloads.
- Monitor the status of ongoing jobs and make adjustments to maintain efficiency and meet deadlines.
- Supervise and support service technicians, providing guidance and feedback to enhance performance.
- Coordinate with the Shop Foreperson to address technician training needs and resolve technical issues.
- Conduct performance evaluations and implement development plans to improve team skills and capabilities.
- Analyze shop performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance productivity and efficiency.
- Develop and refine shop processes and procedures to streamline operations and reduce downtime.
- Ensure that all work meets the dealership's quality standards and complies with industry regulations.
- Oversee the management of parts inventory and ensure that necessary parts and tools are available for service work.
- Collaborate with the Parts Department to coordinate parts orders and address any inventory issues.
- Ensure that shop equipment is maintained, serviced, and functioning properly.
- Work with the Service Manager and service advisors to address customer concerns and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Implement processes to ensure clear communication with customers regarding service progress and updates.
- Handle escalated customer issues and complaints, providing timely resolutions.
- Monitor and control shop expenses, including labor costs and parts usage, to stay within budget.
- Review and analyze financial reports related to shop production and profitability.
- Implement cost-saving measures while maintaining quality and efficiency.
- Ensure that all shop operations adhere to dealership policies, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
- Promote a safe working environment by enforcing safety protocols and conducting regular safety inspections.
- Maintain accurate records of production metrics, job status, and technician performance.
- Prepare and present reports on shop productivity, efficiency, and other key performance indicators to management.
- Maintain satisfactory attendance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5 years of hands-on experience working as an automotive technician.2 years of experience in overseeing shop operations, managing staff, and ensuring timely completion of work orders.
- Valid Driver’s license and safe driving record; If currently out-of-state, a California driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform all essential functions of the job description.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced understanding and knowledge of operations, and repair process/procedures.
- Proven experience managing people or processes within a service department.
- Ability to be analytical, multi-task and problem solve.
- Highly organized, able to handle multiple concurrent assignments.
- Proficient computer skills and prior estimating software experience required.
- Ability to receive direction and work well with others.
- Proficient with CDK.
Physical Demands:
- Physical ability to stand, walk, and work in various positions (e.g., bending, kneeling) for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity to handle tools and small parts.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
- Ability to frequently lift 30 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in tight spaces.
- Frequently bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections.
Environment/Noise:
- Work in well-ventilated and well-lit repair shop.
- Exposure to hazardous conditions and equipment that may result in minor injuries.
- Frequent use of protective gear such as goggles and earplugs.
- Work both indoors and outdoors, something in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
