Job Summary:

The Dealership Used Car Manager is responsible for managing the dealership’s used vehicle inventory, overseeing the acquisition, pricing, and sale of pre-owned cars. This role involves working closely with the sales team to ensure optimal inventory levels, implementing strategies to maximize profitability, and maintaining high standards of vehicle quality and presentation.

Essential Functions: 

  • Oversee the acquisition and management of used car inventory, ensuring a diverse and high-quality selection of vehicles.
  • Develop and implement strategies for sourcing used vehicles, including trade-ins, auctions, and direct purchases.
  • Monitor inventory levels and adjust purchasing strategies to maintain optimal stock levels and meet market demand.
  • Set competitive pricing for used vehicles based on market research, vehicle condition, and dealership goals.
  • Conduct thorough appraisals of trade-in vehicles and potential acquisitions to determine fair market value.
  • Utilize appraisal tools and market data to make informed pricing decisions and maximize profitability.
  • Conduct thorough evaluations of used vehicles by inspecting their physical condition, conducting test drives to assess their mechanical performance, and determining their market and potential resale value.
  • Ensure that all used vehicles meet dealership standards for quality and presentation before being offered for sale.
  • Coordinate with the reconditioning and service departments to address any necessary repairs or maintenance.
  • Implement and oversee quality control processes to ensure vehicles are in optimal condition for sale.
  • Collaborate with the sales team to develop and execute strategies to drive used car sales and meet sales targets.
  • Work with the marketing department to create promotional materials and campaigns specific to used vehicles.
  • Monitor sales performance and adjust strategies as needed to achieve dealership objectives.
  • Provide exceptional customer service throughout the used car buying process, from initial contact to post-sale follow-up.
  • Offer test drives to all prospects. Follow dealership procedures to obtain proper identification from customers prior to test drive.
  • Address and resolve customer concerns or issues related to used vehicles promptly and professionally.
  • Foster a customer-centric environment and encourage positive relationships with potential buyers.
  • Supervise and support the used car sales team, providing training, guidance, and performance evaluations.
  • Set clear performance goals and expectations for the team and monitor progress toward achieving these goals.
  • Promote a collaborative and motivated team environment to drive sales and improve performance.
  • Maintain accurate records of inventory, sales, and financial performance related to used car operations.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on inventory levels, sales performance, and market trends to dealership management.
  • Analyze data to identify opportunities for improvement and implement strategies to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Ensure that all used car transactions and processes comply with dealership policies, legal requirements, and industry regulations.
  • Maintain high ethical standards in all business dealings and transactions related to used vehicles.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices to ensure compliance and competitiveness.
  • Maintain satisfactory attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, hire, and train department staff.
  • Oversee the daily workflow of the department.
  • Conduct timely and constructive performance evaluations.
  • Manage discipline and termination of employees in alignment with company policies. 

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience in automotive sales.
  • Two to three years of leadership experience in a management role.
  • Experience specifically in used vehicle sales, including knowledge of sourcing, pricing, and reconditioning processes.
  • Valid state sales license.
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record; required to have California driver's license within 30 days following date of hire.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
  • Ability to perform all essential functions of the job description.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of automotive sales processes, used car pricing, and appraisal methods.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Effective leadership and team management skills, with experience in training and developing staff.
  • Proficient in using dealership management software, CRM systems, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret sales data and market trends.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently stands, walks, sits; uses hands; frequently reaches with hands and arms; frequently talks and hears.
  • Occasionally climbs or balances; occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, squats or crawls; occasionally lifts up to 15 pounds.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
