Job purpose:

This position is responsible for providing technical assistance and coordinating quality assurance activities in support of Operations.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide quality assurance dispositioning activities for finished plate and coil products
  • Develops operating practices to produce quality steel products meeting or exceeding industry standards and customer requirements. 
  • Reviews manufacturing practices on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with established operating practices
  • Assists in the design, execution and reporting of product development and quality improvement trials
  • Interprets data and makes recommendations to Operations management with guidance from supervisor.
  • Investigates quality-related production problems and recommends cost-effective solutions
  • Implements quality and productivity enhancements using statistical techniques
  • Manages disposition of material which does not meet requirements for intended application
  • Provides support by assisting with customer tours
  • Regular reliable attendance

 

Qualifications: Education and Experience:

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science / Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline

Required Experience:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to navigate multiple databases
  • Strong analytical capability and problem solving skills

Preferred Experience:

  • Co-Op work experience in manufacturing environment with metallurgical focus

 

Working conditions:

The employee will frequently be required to:

  • Operate in an office environment.  The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, network tools/equipment, phones, photocopiers and scanners. This role is partially sedentary (approx. 5-6 hours per day), however, frequent standing and walking is required.
  • This position works in the mill and in the field environment with some exposure to heat/cold, walking, climbing stairs, noise and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards

The employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Some handling of materials is required.  This would require the ability to walk, bend, kneel or stand, use of hands to finger, hold and handle, reach with hands and arms and to push/pull, lift or carry items up to 50 lbs.
  • Drive or travel by airplane

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

  • Talking person to person, on the phone, and/or in group settings
  • Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings
  • Vision at near, mid, and far range

 

Position Type – Work Hours – Travel Requirements:

  • Position is full time, exempt
  • Works an eight (8) hour day shift, Monday through Friday – additional overtime as needed
  • Travel 5% of time in the field or at other SSAB locations
  • Onsite presence required
