About the Role 

The Academic Specialist serves as a key member of the student support team, working directly with students in Grades 3 through 8 to provide targeted instruction in reading and math. This role is distinct from that of a classroom teacher or resource teacher; the Academic Specialist delivers both enrichment and remediation in small-group or one-on-one settings, based on student performance data and teacher referrals. The goal is to enhance academic achievement through data driven instruction.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement individualized or small-group intervention and enrichment lessons in reading and math.
  • Use diagnostic, formative, and summative data to identify student needs and monitor progress.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align support with curriculum goals and classroom instruction.
  • Maintain detailed records of student progress and communicate regularly with teachers, administrators, and families.
  • Participate in student support team meetings and assist in developing action plans for students who need additional academic support or challenge.
  • Contribute to the creation of a responsive and inclusive learning environment that meets diverse learning needs.
  • Provide push-in or pull-out instruction based on student and classroom needs.
  • Offer resources, strategies, and professional input to faculty to help differentiate instruction effectively.
  • Support standardized test preparation and analyze assessment data to inform instruction.

Employment Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required; Master’s degree in Literacy, Mathematics, or Education preferred; Credential preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of classroom or academic support experience at the elementary or middle school level.
  • Strong background in reading and math instruction, including experience with intervention programs (e.g., Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Singapore Math, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to support a range of learners, including those above and below grade level.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience in private or independent school settings is preferred but not required.
