Tax Principal

As a Principal serving the tax needs of our clients, your primary role will be to grow and build a successful business line serving the needs of the tax market. As a key member of our Tax team, you will be responsible for maintaining relationships with and advising individual tax clients and the businesses they own. In addition, you will manage, research, schedule, supervise, and review tax services/engagements while developing and mentoring members of the tax team. You will also partner with other principals, managers, and directors on tax compliance. You will work side-by-side with firm leadership and our team members to serve clients and build the business, having a direct impact on the firm’s success. You will be a valued mentor and coach to a group of talented staff, utilizing your expertise to help develop their technical and professional skills.
A Principal will focus their duties and responsibilities in four major areas. Those areas include:
- Client Service (Billable time)
- Business Development
- Team Development
- Operational and administrative duties as assigned.
The Principal’s other responsibilities will include the provision of exceptional services to our clients in a manner such that the client is WOWed by the experience. This includes the following:
- The service has been provided in a timely and professional manner and for a fee which is supportable and beneficial to the firm
- Other opportunities to meet client needs have been identified and explored
- The client service team has grown technically and taken on more responsibilities
- The firm’s professional and business risk has been managed appropriately
- The firm’s reporting and documentation requirements related to the provision of these services have been met
All decision-making responsibility related to the provision of these client services will belong to the Tax Principal, unless otherwise identified by the firm or department.
A Principal will have the opportunity and is expected to provide feedback on both department and firm decisions using their skills, knowledge and experience to assist in guiding the decision-making process for the Tax Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manage an appropriate amount of work to allow you to meet your Client Service goals.
- Actively recruit experienced and entry-level talent to build the team to support the anticipated revenues to be generated.
- Train team members in the provision of the firm’s services, such that those team members grow professionally and take on ever increasing levels of responsibilities at an appropriate but rapid pace.
- Actively engage in the industries and communities that the firm wishes to serve with the direct intention of developing Business Development opportunities for the firm and the department.
- Engage in activities to actively sell work the department and firm can service through participating in the preparation and submission of proposals, meeting with prospective clients, collaborating with team members throughout the firm to offer additional services to existing clients, and to proactively engage in business development activities (e.g., attending REDW sponsored events, and if possible, presenting at, conferences, workshops, webinars and seminars, etc.).
- Utilize your entrepreneurial skills to network and build strong relationships internally and externally with the goal of acquiring new clients, projects, and revenue. Actively participate in request for proposals to pursue additional clients/services for the firm
- Properly define the scope of the client service engagements within the engagement letter and work directly with the client service team to assure there is no scope expansion. If scope expansion occurs, assure that an appropriate discussion has occurred with the client regarding potential additional fees and delivery time impacts.
- Work directly with the client service team to assure that appropriate real-time feedback regarding their performance of team members is occurring during the engagement.
- Review and bill all unbilled WIP on a regular basis (not less than monthly in accordance with Department requirements) and provide for adequate WIP allowances, if needed.
- Collect all balances owed to the firm from clients where you serve as Principal in a timely manner, generally within 90 days. Provide for allowances for uncollectable receivables and work with the Finance Department for alternative methods for collecting these fees.
- Serve as a resource to provide training to our team at scheduled CPE days or other learning events of the firm and the department.
- Serve as a Professional Development Program (“PDP”) advisor for an appropriate base of team members.
- Complete all operational and administrative requirements on a timely basis.
- Provide input and support the decisions of the Tax Leadership.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of AICPA professional standards.
- Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Ability to provide seamless, integrated services to clients.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and build client relationships.
- Ability to coach and mentor members of the team.
- Must be detail-oriented and be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Desire to be an intricate part of business development and marketing strategies.
- Ability to work independently yet be part of a strong Tax team.
- Demonstrated experience managing business Tax engagements.
- Ability to provide complex tax planning strategies to high-net-worth clients.
- Manages projects to meet deadlines and assumes responsibility for completing engagements on time, ensuring project completion with maximum efficiency and without rework.
- The ability to handle competing deadlines and work positively to ensure successful completion of all projects on time and on budget.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Current CPA license.
- A minimum of eight+ years of experience in a public accounting and/or professional services firm.
- 2+ years in a Senior Leadership role.

The potential annualized pay range for this position is $208,325 - $260,411. We make compensation offers within the range based on a range of individual factors, including but not limited to location, skills, experience, training, licensure and certifications, business needs, and applicable employment laws. These factors may also be taken into consideration to offer above or below the pay range.
