POSITION PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and Head Coach, the Swim Coach is expected to provide support and encouragement to assist swimmers in learning the specific progressive or competitive program. Ensure safety and cleanliness of the program area and adherence to all YMCA safety standards and rules.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead swimmers through skill mastery and swim practices
  • Provide a safe environment that allows swim team participants to learn YMCA Competitive Swimming and diving.  
  • Encourage and support swimmers to provide an enjoyable YMCA experience.
  • Evaluate swimmers’ skills; provide skills needed to master strokes.
  • Ensure fair practice and swim meet experience
  • Coach must supervise the entire swim meet, including warm-ups, practice dives, events, etc., ensuring the safety of the swimmers
  • Conduct practices with energy and enthusiasm
  • Provide support and encouragement to participants
  • Incorporate character development objectives into the program to reinforce the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Regularly check equipment for necessary repair or replacement
  • Provide excellent service to members and participants.  
  • Communicate all YMCA rule and ensure that you are accessible and identifiable.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required
  • Provide excellent service to members and participants. 
  • Communicate all pool rules and ensure that you are accessible and identifiable.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • 18 years old with High School Degree or equivalent, 2 years of directly related experience in developing and conducting programs.
  • Ability to work a non-traditional schedule including nights and weekends.
  • Know any computer software that is used for the running of meets and swimmer line ups.
  • Current Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer or ARC Lifeguard/First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer instructor certification.
  • Maintain current instructor and instructor trainer certifications (YMCA, Red Cross, etc.).

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All Greater Philadelphia YMCA staff are responsible for the following:

  • As a Mandated Reporter you are obligated to report ALL suspicions of abuse or neglect to the requisite state agency.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to communicate information, instructions, and ideas so others will understand.  Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations between staff, members, children, and volunteers accurately. The ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling; ability to move 20 pounds independently and utilize the “buddy system” or team lift for heavier items.  The person needs to occasionally move about the program area to access materials, members/program participants, emergency equipment, etc. Constantly positions self to maintain program materials, including under desks, in closets, and on top of shelves. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to observe details at close range of objects where they actually are within a distance of 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The physical environment requires the employee to possibly work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure such as hearing protection and rubber gloves.

 

Acquire and maintain the following certifications:

  • CPR/AED/O2 (valid 2 years with exception of Aquatics to renew annually), First Aid (valid 2 years) obtained through the American Red Cross
  • Requisite OSHA online trainings (valid 1 year unless otherwise noted)
  • Mandated Reporter Training (valid 5 years)
  • Additional training and development specific to your role as reference in onboarding packet.
