FT Aquatics Coach Leader (Regional Coach)

POSITION PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Executive Leader, the Regional Swim Coach/Instructor manages the swim team in accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the YMCA of the USA as well as the rules from their respective swimming league. The Regional Swim Coach/Instructor will conduct practices at the Columbia North, West Philadelphia and Christian Street branch locations with their primary location being the Christian Street YMCA. This position is responsible for preparing practice workouts plans and swim meet line-ups as well as teaching swim lessons and or lifeguarding as necessary. Coaches and Instructors are to ensure a positive, healthy and valuable experience for all participants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Lead swimmers through skill mastery and swim practices.
- Recruit, train, and supervise the competitive swim staff and conduct monthly staff meetings.
- Evaluate swimmers’ skills; provide skills needed to master strokes.
- Instruct Swim lessons or certification classes in accordance with Y-USA and American Red Cross Standards.
- Regularly check equipment for necessary repair or replacement.
- Ensure fair practice and swim meet experience.
- Conduct practices with energy and enthusiasm.
- Provide support and encouragement to participants.
- Be on deck before swimmers enter water. Swimmers are not to be left unsupervised during practice or at any swim meet.
- Coach must supervise the entire swim meet, including warm-ups, practice dives, events, etc., ensuring the safety of the swimmers.
- The coach is responsible for setting up home meets and work with the parents committee in securing volunteers to run the swim meets.
- Provide excellent service to members and participants. Communicate all YMCA rules and ensure that you are accessible and identifiable.
- Assist the Aquatic Director as needed to ensure that the facilities meet and exceed Association Safety Standards.
- Lead by example at all times. Interact with a high level of professionalism and accountability.
- Serve as a member of the management team.
- Actively campaign for the Annual Campaign and work to develop donors and volunteers.
- Serve as a member of the branch management team and Director on Duty for the branch.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
- 18 years old with High School Degree or equivalent, 2 years of directly related experience in developing and conducting programs.
- Ability to work a non-traditional schedule including nights and weekends.
- Know any computer software that is used for the running of meets and swimmer line ups.
- Current Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer or ARC Lifeguard/First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer instructor certification.
- Maintain current instructor and instructor trainer certifications (YMCA, Red Cross, etc.).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to communicate information, instructions, and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations between staff, members, children, and volunteers accurately. The ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling; ability to move 20 pounds independently and utilize the “buddy system” or team lift for heavier items. The person needs to occasionally move about the program area to access materials, members/program participants, emergency equipment, etc. Constantly positions self to maintain program materials, including under desks, in closets, and on top of shelves. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to observe details at close range of objects where they actually are within a distance of 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The physical environment requires the employee to possibly work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure such as hearing protection and rubber gloves.
Acquire and maintain the following certifications:
- CPR/AED/O2 (valid 2 years with exception of Aquatics to renew annually), First Aid (valid 2 years) obtained through the American Red Cross
- Requisite OSHA online trainings (valid 1 year unless otherwise noted)
- Mandated Reporter Training (valid 5 years)
- Additional training and development specific to your role as reference in onboarding packet.
