The IT Systems Engineer 2 at MacLean-Fogg plays a key role in designing, implementing, and maintaining the organization’s IT infrastructure. This role ensures the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of information systems supporting core organizational functions. The IT Systems Engineer 2 provides advanced technical support, system administration, and configuration for applications, servers, networks, storage, security, and cloud services.

This position is responsible for troubleshooting complex technical issues, optimizing system performance, and leading infrastructure improvement projects. Additionally, they collaborate with cross-functional teams to align IT infrastructure with business goals, ensuring scalability, security, and efficiency. The role requires strong problem-solving skills, technical expertise, and the ability to work independently while mentoring junior team members.

Job Details

  • Position Type: Full-Time
  • Pay Range: $90,000 - $110,000
  • Work Location: Mundelein, Illinois (Hybrid)

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Planning and Strategy: Conduct IT infrastructure analysis, identify gaps, risks, and opportunities, and contribute to disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
  • Design and Implementation: Develop, document, and execute IT infrastructure designs, including procurement, installation, and configuration of hardware, software, and cloud solutions. Support virtualization, cloud computing, and automation efforts.
  • System Administration and Maintenance: Manage, optimize, and secure Windows Server, Active Directory, Entra ID, M365, and cloud-based services. Monitor and troubleshoot system performance, security, capacity, and availability. Maintain backup solutions, patch management, and system updates.
  • Troubleshooting and Support: Provide Tier 2 support for escalated hardware, software, network, and security issues. Diagnose and resolve complex technical problems, collaborating with vendors or higher-level support teams when necessary. Automate repetitive tasks using PowerShell and other scripting tools.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain detailed records of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps; ensure compliance with 5S, safety, environmental, and quality policies.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Work with IT teams and stakeholders to resolve technical challenges, optimize IT infrastructure, and provide guidance to junior engineers.
  • Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned.

 

Skills/Competencies

  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, Entra ID, Microsoft Cloud, and M365 services.
  • Troubleshooting and Automation: Strong problem-solving skills with virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V) and scripting (PowerShell) expertise.
  • IT Knowledge: Solid understanding of IT infrastructure, networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP), cloud computing, and ITIL best practices.
  • Problem-Solving and Analytical Skills: Ability to diagnose complex issues, escalate when necessary, and follow strategic IT directions.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Effective team player with mentoring capabilities and ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams. 
  • Adaptability and Organization: Ability to learn new technologies, implement innovative solutions, and maintain strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

 

Qualifications

Required

  • Education: Bachelor's
  • Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 3-5 years of experience in IT systems, infrastructure engineering, or a related role.
  • Proven success in supporting and delivering IT projects.
