Manager, Animal Care, Duchess Sanctuary
The general hourly range for this full time position is $30 – 40, plus full benefits. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.
Humane World for Animals, a global leader in animal advocacy and protection, is seeking an Animal Care Manager for Duchess Sanctuary in Oakland, Oregon. In this full-time position, you will oversee all aspects of animal care and the management of animal care staff and volunteers. You will ensure proper care is given to all animals according to approved protocols and standards, communicate with manager and contractors regarding animal medical and facility needs and maintains records.
Responsibilities:
- Manages the day-to-day aspects of animal husbandry and ensures the animals receive the highest quality care. This includes, but is not limited to assisting in the development, updating and implementation of animal care and sanctuary protocols, assisting with feeding and daily care, the dispensing of medication and the treatment of ill and injured animals, ensuring the maintenance of existing animal pens and sanctuary facilities, and assisting with examinations and surgeries performed on the property. Maintains high standards of cleanliness and safety at all times. Remains aware of the changing needs of animals in different weather conditions and addresses seasonal changes and needs;
- Manages the volunteer program including recruiting, orientating, training and scheduling volunteers;
- Manages the work of the animal care staff and ensures that staff achieve their goals including providing staff with guidance and advice, training, performance management, leadership and career development. Creates and maintains feed, care, and other task policy and procedure documents;
- Maintains health records for all animals using computer and hard copy. Assists with veterinary and farrier coordination and scheduling;
- Monitors inventory level of animal husbandry supplies. Orders supplies including required food products, medications, and animal care supplies. Organizes, stores, and stocks supplies. Maintains records of feed consumption;
- Captures, moves, and transports animals on the property or to the veterinarian;
- Assists with project planning and problem solving;
- Assists with emergency planning, preparation, and training;
- Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in animal management or other relevant specialty or equivalent work experience required;
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in equine husbandry and/or equine management required. Experience with wild/feral and senior equines a plus;
- Management/supervisory experience required;
- Must have advanced knowledge of equine husbandry;
- Must be able to safely operate a truck and horse trailer, lawnmower, weed-eater, ATV and various sized tractor attachments;
- A valid driver’s license is required and a clean driving record is strongly preferred, with the ability to demonstrate and maintain a safe driving record while employed;
- Must have or be able to maintain certification in CPR and first aid;
- Willing and able to work a flexible schedule that includes weekdays, weekends and holidays and endure occasional long workdays;
- Ability to lead and guide staff to meet department and organizational goals. Strong knowledge of staff management practices. Flexible, willing to learn, and anticipates the needs of self and staff;
- Ability to set a positive tone for employees during their day;
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines and changing demands; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
- Ability to manage issues requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to learn new software;
- Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
- Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
