Position Summary:

The Engineering Manager will lead and manage the engineering team in the design, development, and continuous improvement of Hill & Smith’s product lines. This role will drive innovation in support of our strategic growth initiatives, ensure regulatory compliance, and support cross-functional teams across product development, manufacturing, and customer support. The Engineering Manager will blend technical expertise, project leadership, and people management to build solutions aligned with our core values of safety, collaboration, accountability, and forward thinking.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on, solutions-oriented leader with a strong background in product design and manufacturing. They are a confident communicator who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys developing others, and is energized by solving complex engineering challenges with practical, real-world applications.

This position is hybrid remote eligible; however, the Engineering Manager must be onsite at least two days per week at either our Morgan, UT or Lake City, FL facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of mechanical and electrical engineers to deliver product design, development, and improvement initiatives.
  • Own the engineering lifecycle from concept to commercialization, ensuring projects meet scope, cost, quality, and timeline goals.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Management, Operations, and Sales to define requirements, evaluate feasibility, and support product launches.
  • Champion innovation by identifying new technologies and design approaches that enhance product performance, safety, and sustainability.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable industry regulations, standards, and DOT requirements.
  • Implement engineering best practices, standardization, documentation, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Oversee engineering change orders, product data management, and configuration control.
  • Support manufacturing by resolving design-related issues, participating in root cause analyses, and driving cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Mentor and develop engineering team members by fostering a culture of learning, accountability, and technical excellence.

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering (or related field).
  • 7+ years of progressive engineering experience, including 2+ years in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of product design, structural analysis, prototyping, and testing methodologies.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes including metal fabrication and welding.
  • Proficient in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), FEA tools, and engineering documentation.
  • Excellent project management and team leadership skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

Preferred:

  • Experience with transportation safety products or DOT-regulated equipment.
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles.
