Duties:             Provide expertise in software engineering in support of radio astronomy instrumentation development, test, and evaluation. Design, develop, and maintain the code base for in-house developed software projects for the NRAO development laboratory for instrumentation and test and evaluation systems for use in radio astronomy. Perform all aspects of the software engineering lifecycle from requirements derivation through design, development, and integration into calibration and measurement systems and the associated sensors and hardware used in telescope operations. Research, conduct and coordinate detailed phases of software engineering work, scientific development, and technical coordination for assigned projects.  Assist senior staff in development of system specifications and contribute to development of standards. Assist in preparing costs and time analyses of projects. Make recommendations for procedures, equipment purchases, and other improvements.

Requirements: Bachelor’s or foreign equivalent in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering plus three years of related software engineering experience. Experience must include use of Linux and Windows operating systems; debugging hardware and software interactions; programming and performing data acquisition with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and vector network analyzers; programming devices used for radio frequency measurements; and developing firmware for embedded systems and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Skill set does not need to be maintained over the full term of required experience.
