The Indirect Tax Director role is responsible for all aspects of property tax, sales & use tax and unclaimed property including compliance, audit support, and SOX documentation. The Indirect Tax Director is also responsible for training and managing the indirect tax group.

Asbury is relocating its corporate headquarters to Sandy Springs, GA in Fall of 2025. Upon completion of our headquarters’ relocation, this role will be based in our Sandy Springs, GA office.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage all Indirect Tax audits. The position requires strong interpersonal skills as well as the ability to multi-task. Numerous audits are ongoing at any given time and this position requires a persistent and proactive focus to move them along with favorable outcomes.
  • Tax research associated with proposed transactions and proposed restructuring. Written documentation and analysis of technical positions.
  • Ensure the Company is in compliance with all external and internal unclaimed property requirements
  • Be comfortable working with minimal supervision and provide solutions to issues that arise.
  • Ensure the fixed assets are properly classified and the aligned with the needs of property tax
  • Provide technical support to the dealerships for various tax research questions and notices that arise.
  • Maintain the tax calendar for the Company’s entities, including calendars of extensions, returns, and election deadlines.
  • Responsible for filing of tangible personal property tax returns for all dealerships in multiple state jurisdictions.
  • Maintain internal controls documentation over all indirect tax processes.
  • Manage PwC on the Unclaimed Property compliance.
  • Assist the Vice President - Tax with various other assignments and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • Master’s Degree in Accounting or Tax preferred.
  • CPA license preferred.
  • Experience with the automobile industry is a plus.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive tax experience with a public accounting firm and/or a large company.
  • In-depth knowledge of state sales and property tax laws and regulations.
  • Previous state audit experience and thorough knowledge of state compliance processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Strong project management, organization, and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Can work both independently and in a team, on multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, collaborative environment.
  • Capable of communicating with multiple taxing authorities on notices and appraised values.
  • Able to exercise effective judgment, sensitivity, and creativity to changing needs and situations.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally up and down the organization with proven ability to build relationships, establish trust, and credibility.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Experience with property tax filing software and BNA fixed asset software a plus, but not required.
