CREDIT RECOVERY & CORE INSTRUCTOR

 

 

Department: ACJC – Family Relations                                                                      FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Classification/Level: Part-time                                                                                   Date: 04/2025

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Education, the Credit Recovery and CORE (Creating Opportunities for Resilience in Education) Instructor is responsible for two primary areas: assisting high school students in recovering academic credits needed to remain on track for graduation and collaborating with the CORE team to develop and deliver a Soft Skills Education Program for middle school students enrolled at the Allen County Learning Academy. Responsibilities include instructional delivery, lesson planning, assessment development, student supervision, recordkeeping, and collaboration with staff, families, and external partners, while maintaining frequent contact with at-risk youth.  This position is covered under the Superior Court Employee Handbook. This is an employee-at-will position.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Provides instruction to students using current research strategies for teaching Soft Skills and Social/Emotional skills as required for the CORE components of the school classroom curriculum. Provides differentiated instruction to ensure that all students can master the CORE skills.
  • Researches best practices for helping students understand the value of Soft Skills in their everyday life.
  • Designs and develops pre-post assessments for each unit being taught and also develops lesson plans that will allow students to gain the required knowledge of the CORE Program.
  • Grades papers, enters grades, tracks data and attendance for students, compiles information for conferences, and makes copies for student use.
  • Collaborates with teaching and administrative staff during staff meetings regarding student academic/behavior issues and during student-teacher-parent conferences.
  • Supervises students during non-instructional times including, but not limited to, morning arrival, passing periods, restroom breaks, lunch periods, dismissal, study hall/table period, and during special student programs.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work or Childhood Development preferred
  • Associate’s Degree in related field and/or classroom management experience accepted
  • Valid Indiana license either through the Department of Education or through the Department of Workforce Development aligning with degree field and/or subject matter
  • Appropriate knowledge of the subject area(s) and Life Skills
  • General knowledge in academic areas of online study through assigned Learning Management Systems
  • Certification in CPR/AED/First Aid
  • Primary Restraint Technique (PRT) Certification (provided by ACJC annually, at no cost)
  • Ability to communicate academic and behavioral problems to administrators and/or school corporations
  • Recordkeeping skills to maintain student records regarding grades and attendance
  • Strong written and verbal skills including technical writing skills needed for report writing
  • Supervisory skills needed to supervise at risk juveniles
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of facility records and information
  • Strong computer skills including the ability to use Microsoft Office, Google Forms, etc.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

 

The Credit Recovery and CORE Instructor maintains frequent and professional contact with students, educational staff, administrative personnel, and external partners such as probation officers, case managers, and families. The role requires the ability to communicate effectively across diverse audiences to support academic progress, behavioral development, and program goals, while demonstrating empathy, cultural sensitivity, and professionalism in all interactions.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS SUMMARY:

 

The Credit Recovery and CORE Instructor works primarily in a classroom or office setting with frequent sitting, standing, and computer use. The position requires occasional bending, lifting, reaching overhead, and pushing or pulling of materials. Frequent typing, attention to detail, and monitoring of students are essential components of the role. The Instructor frequently interacts with at-risk, hostile, or aggressive youth and must be capable of performing physical restraints when necessary. Exposure to stressful situations is common and maintaining a safe and controlled environment is critical.

 

  • Frequently sits, stands, types, and monitors students in a classroom or office setting.
  • Occasionally bends, lifts, reaches overhead, and pushes or pulls materials and equipment.
  • Must be able to physically restrain hostile or aggressive juveniles when necessary.
