Packaging Structural Engineer I
Job Summary
The Packaging Structural Engineer works with New Product Development and Existing Product Resources to design and manage packaging from concept to commercialization through distribution. The Packaging Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional business partners to develop packaging designs for brand & operational excellence. This position is responsible for creating and detailing packaging specifications including CAD, Data, Bills of Materials, QC and PLM.
Packaging Engineers are responsible for all aspects of packaging structures across all Hillman segments.
Essential Job Functions *
- Manage the complete packaging development process, including packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.
- Resolve new and existing packaging that includes design, materials, production, distribution, and processes. Provide creative timely cost-effective packaging solutions with cross-functional alignment.
- Collaborate to specify physical characteristics of packaging to include special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required.
- Manage industry package testing requirements. Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.
- Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Work closely with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing.
- Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
- Work as part of the Development Team to optimize packaging structures for costs, lead times, regionalization, standardization, quality assurance, customer compliance, sustainability, and regulatory specifications for internal & external requirements.
- Manage packaging data documentation.

Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Package Engineering/ Science Technology, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent packaging experience
- Experience in packaging development and/or ISTA ASTM testing
- 1-4 years’ experience related to packaging design engineering & processes is recommended

- Essential understanding of packaging materials capabilities and equipment.
- CAD: ArtiosCAD, Packaging Software, Solidworks,
- Microsoft Office Suite, Agile or SAP
- Able to work independently and meet deadlines in a multi-tasking environment.
- Ability to work with autonomy as well as collaboratively with team members.
- Excellent written, oral, listening, organizational and presentation skills.
- Occasionally lift up to 40lbs may be required.
- Ownership & integrity of project requirements
Operational Equipment
- Packaging prototyping and testing experience is preferred.
