Position: Sr. VP – Development & Mission Advancement  

Reports To: Chief Administrative Officer 

 

This position is exempt and is not eligible for overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 during a single calendar week (Monday - Sunday)

Position Overview

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Senior Vice President of Development & Mission Advancement serves as an integral member of the senior management for an assigned division or area of responsibility within the network of the organization. The Senior Vice President is responsible for the development of management strategies to meet priority goals and is a primary contributor to the development of the organizations strategic plan.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the strategic direction of their respective division and is an active participant in the strategic planning process of the agency.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive written annual resource development plan with strategies for donors.
  • Broadens FREE’s fundraising by developing approaches such as planned giving, solicitation of bequests, and endowment program.
  • Plans and executes diverse annual fundraising events for the organization.
  • Creates and implements strategies for donor development and cultivation which will provide a diverse and sustainable funding base for FREE.
  • Keeps up-to-date on current fundraising programs, practices and procedures used in the nonprofit sector and informs the affiliate leadership of items that would benefit the agency.
  • Creates and implements major gifts program and planned giving program.
  • Creates and updates collateral materials to support gift cultivation in partnership with marketing team.
  • Identifies and pursues new sources of corporate and foundation funding.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with major donors.
  • Develops strategies for solicitation, and solicits or coordinates the solicitation by other affiliate staff, board or volunteers, as appropriate.
  • Develops and implements all aspects of direct donor mailings, appeal letters, and other donor mailings as needed.
  • Responsible for the development and management of annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and commitment to quality.
  • Maximizes the use of internal resources by interfacing with other colleagues and departments to ensure the effective and efficient oversight of a division.
  • Participates in the formulation of policies and procedures that meet local, state and federal requirements and assures the delivery of the highest quality of supports and services to the people served.
  • Ensures highly productive relationships for the benefit of the organization.
  • Ensures that functions within the division conform to all regulations and applicable federal, state, local and agency requirements.
  • Interviews, hires, develops and retains high quality staff.
  • Ensures all assigned team members are fulfilling their roles and responsibilities. Provides supervision and guidance to all team members on an ongoing basis. Addresses performance issues through performance improvement or corrective action measures.
  • Provides support and oversight to all assigned team members; including tracking training and other credentialing requirements, conducting required performance evaluations and more.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Always communicates in a respectful manner with all people including the people we support, supervisors, other valued team members, and members of the community.
  • Represents the Agency by participating in external committees (via trade, advocacy, government entities and other associations) and at agency functions when requested.
  • Coordinates, supports, attends and participates in all required events/ meetings/ reviews/ committees, including ones outside of standard working hours.
  • Provides on-call coverage, as needed.
  • Reports all violations and/or accidents in Agency or personal vehicle in accordance with New York State regulations and Agency policy.
  • Completes all required trainings and stay in compliance.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of any information relating to individuals and employees of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Work Experience, and Competencies 

Bachelors Degree required and Masters Strongly preferred. A minimum of five years of development and/or planned giving.

Right candidate can be considered with equivalent combination of education and experience (ex: BA/BS & 7 years’ experience)

  • Demonstrated competency in all state, local, federal regulations and agency policies relevant to the operation of the division
  • Familiarity with government and local legislative entities required to sufficiently operate the division
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strategic thinking, problem solving, and financial management skills
  • Ability to balance competing priorities, complex situations, and meet deadlines
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and satisfy criteria to be a driver for FREE
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with flexibility, keeping others informed and anticipating needs is essential
  • Must be efficient, well organized, and have excellent communication skills

Physical Demands

  • Employee is required to travel between locations           
  • Employee is required to sit, walk and stand for prolonged period of time (at least 8 hours)
  • Employee is required to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Employee is required to operate standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, fax and filing cabinets
  • Employee might be required to reach with hands and arms, move and/or lift light items
